Skateboard trucks are the steering, suspension and grinding centrepoint of your setup, the one component that outlasts everything else and shapes how every push, turn and grind feels. Shop skateboard trucks at The Vines from the world's best truck companies: Independent, Thunder, Venture, Ace, Lurpiv, Slappy and more.

Skateboard Trucks History
Early skateboarders rode repurposed roller skate axles, basic steering, nowhere near strong enough for where skating was heading. Purpose-built trucks arrived in the mid-1970s with pioneers like Bennett, but the true revolution came in 1978 when Independent launched the Stage I, designed by Jay Shuirman, geometry and durability that instantly set the gold standard, with Thunder arriving from San Francisco in 1986 to challenge it.
The late 80s and 90s grind era forced the biggest leaps: trucks now had to survive rails and ledge locks while still turning precisely, driving innovations like hollow kingpins and axles, forged baseplates, inverted kingpin designs and eventually titanium components. Today's trucks are precision-engineered from aerospace-grade materials, and a good pair will genuinely outlast several decks and wheel sets.
Truck Anatomy & Construction
A truck is a baseplate (bolted to the deck, typically angled around 50 degrees, which defines turning character), a hanger (the T-shaped body you grind, housing the steel axle), a kingpin and bushings (the urethane that compresses as you lean and turn), and a pivot cup that keeps it all smooth. Quality cast T6 aluminium is the proven standard; hollow kingpins and axles trim weight for flip response, and forged baseplates add strength while shaving more.
Height matters too: low trucks suit small wheels and technical street, mid is the versatile standard, and high trucks give clearance for bigger wheels and more leverage for carving transition.
What Size Skateboard Trucks Do I Need?
The rule: match axle width to deck width, within about an eighth of an inch. Brands label sizes differently, so as a guide using Independent's numbering. 139s suit 7.9"–8.1" decks, 144s suit 8.2"–8.3", 149s suit 8.4"–8.6", and 159s suit 8.7"+. Thunder, Venture, Ace and Krux all publish equivalent charts and every product page here lists the deck range each size suits. Trucks too wide or narrow for your deck unbalance weight distribution and flip response, if you're unsure, message us with your deck width and we'll match you up.

Skateboard Trucks FAQs
What size trucks for an 8.25" deck?
In Independent sizing, 144s; in Thunder, 148s; in Venture, 5.6 Hi or Lo. The principle is always the same, axle width matching deck width within an eighth of an inch, and every product page here states the deck range.
Are trucks sold in pairs?
Yes, all our trucks come as a pair with bushings, kingpins and washers fitted. You just need mounting hardware (nuts and bolts) if you don't already have some. Ordering singles is loooong man
Independent, Thunder or Venture: which should I buy?
Indy for legendary turn and grind durability, Thunder for lightweight technical precision, Venture for stability and lock-in. None is wrong, it's a feel preference, broken down fully in our truck brands comparison blog.
Are hollow or forged trucks worth the extra?
If you skate technical street, the weight saving genuinely sharpens flip response. If you mostly cruise or skate transition, standard construction performs identically for less money.
How tight should my trucks be?
Pure preference, loose turns more and demands better balance, tight is stable and predictable. Start medium, adjust a quarter-turn at a time, and consider harder or softer bushings rather than crushing the kingpin nut.
How long do skateboard trucks last?
Years, quality trucks routinely outlive five or more decks. Bushings and pivot cups are cheap, replaceable refresh parts, and Independent backs theirs with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
Do I need riser pads?
Only with bigger wheels, from around 56mm upward risers help prevent wheelbite, especially on low or mid trucks. Under that, most setups don't need them.
