Andrew Reynolds, aka THE BOSS
Baker Skateboards founder Andrew Reynolds is a legendary pro skateboarder known for his solid style, infamous frontside flip and influential career, pioneering some of the most loved skate tapes ever put out, such as Baker 2G and Baker 3. Gaining popularity as part of the Birdhouse Skateboards team, bringing out his timeless video part in Birdhouse's The End.
Beyond skating, Andrew Reynolds' respected for being a mentor to younger skaters, bringing through some youth and helping them thrive on Baker, such as Kader Sylla and Zach Allen. He's a good role model, always respectful and embracing sobriety, and he's an even better pro skateboarder.
The New Balance Numeric #933
Andrew Reynolds' previous pro model skate shoes for Emerica have been a legendary part of skate shoe culture, with the Reynolds 3 being in the Skate Shoe Hall Of Fame, which doesn't officially exist.
So, it's no surprise that when Andrew joined the New Balance Numeric team, back in December 2022, his pro Numeric shoe was highly anticipated.
Skateboarding legend Andrew Reynolds has unveiled his first signature shoe with New Balance Numeric 933.
The #933's Features & Colourways
Drawing inspiration from the classic 990 series, the New Balance Numeric 933 fuses heritage design with modern skate-specific technology. Built with ABZORB cushioning, NDurance rubber outsoles, and a padded tongue, the shoe offers both performance and comfort.
Its clean midsole, subtle underfoot tones, and layered, curving panels reflect the iconic 99x design language. Hidden beneath the insole are early prototype codes—including “8055,” a nod to Andrew’s nickname, The Boss.
The 933 debuts in four colourways:
- “Wheat”
- 'Black/Olive”
- “Grey Day”
- "Olive”
The Design Process of the New Balance Numeric 933
Jeff Mikut, head of design at New Balance Numeric, collaborated closely with Andrew Reynolds for over 18 months to develop the 933—a process he initially found intimidating.
“I had to create something truly compelling for a high-profile client like Andrew Reynolds,” Mikut recalls. “But once we got started, and I saw how much thought and input he was contributing, I felt at ease. I’ve worked with many people over the years, but he was by far the most engaged and clear about his vision. He wasn’t just pointing at other shoes saying, ‘Copy this, copy that.’”
Andrew Reynold's Influence on the New Balance Numeric 933
Reynolds acknowledged that the 933 marks the most hands-on he’s ever been in designing a signature shoe. “When you’re in your 20s, you’ll skate in whatever they give you,” he said. “But this time, I really wanted to tap into everything New Balance had to offer. It felt like a major opportunity.”
Midway through the process, Reynolds and designer Jeff Mikut visited New Balance’s Boston headquarters. What Reynolds expected to be a casual tour turned into an in-depth experience, including meetings with experts from running, basketball, and materials science. That trip proved pivotal—the 933’s ABZORB midsole was born there. Mikut recalls, “The innovation team had a concept for basketball: low to the ground with high impact absorption. We saw the potential for skateboarding right away—thin between foot and board, but still cushioned. Originally it involved gluing materials together, but we evolved it into a glue-free version, which is a huge leap for skate footwear.”
Mikut further explains, “We used two densities on the New Balance Numeric 933—soft cushioning directly underfoot for that running-shoe feel when sprinting into or out of tricks, and firmer sidewalls to stabilize lateral movements, so your foot stays secure even on awkward landings.”
After speaking with New Balance Design Director Johnathan Grondin about how athletes personalize their signature models, Mikut and Reynolds added subtle, meaningful details to the 933. “Without being cheesy,” Mikut said, “every element is intentional. You’ll only notice them if you take the time to really study the shoe.”
Andrew Reynolds' Life in a Shoe
The New Balance Numeric 933 is filled with hidden nods to Andrew Reynolds’ life, both personal and professional. One of the most symbolic details is the ten notches on the toe box, each representing a key moment in his journey: from his birth in 1978 and picking up a skateboard in 1987, to turning pro for Birdhouse in 1995, and being named Thrasher’s Skater of the Year in 1998. Other milestones include founding Baker Skateboards in 2000, getting sober in 2002, the birth of his daughter in 2005, his Stay Gold part dropping in 2010, meeting his partner in 2011, and signing with New Balance Numeric in 2022.
Throughout the shoe, subtle “numeric” Easter eggs are scattered. Reynolds shares, “There’s a little cloud drawing from my daughter stitched onto the back of the 933. And under the insole are all the different numbers we considered but didn’t use.”
Jeff Mikut explains, “We knew people would have questions about why we chose 933. So inside the shoe, we crossed out every number it could have been—8055, 333, 999, 993—and left 933 as the final choice.” The number “8055” nods to Reynolds' nickname, The Boss, while “333” links to his well-known “Madness”—a habit of repeating actions three times, which gained attention in a 2007 episode of Epicly Later’d.

When will the New Balance Numeric #933 be Released?
After years of anticipation and months of leaks and teasers, the wait is almost over for the highly-anticipated New Balance Numeric Andrew Reynolds 933 shoe. Releasing in the US this week, the rest of the world has another couple of weeks to wait with the official New Balance Reynolds 933 release date set for the 14th May 2025 for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
