TG Ramp Jam 25/09/22

Solihull skateboarders have been using Tudor Grange Skatepark as a meeting point and training ground since its opening in 2003. At the time, next to the main section of the skatepark, there was a wooden mini ramp. Fast forward to today and the wooden ramps are outdated. Although the park isn't a skateboarders dream park, it is still the local to lots of new and old talented skateboarders.

The mini was so battered and damaged it caused an injury which resulted in the ramp being removed altogether. For years, the area where the ramp once stood was empty and unused. Ourselves and local skaters have been pestering the council for a new ramp to replace the old one for years! We were incredibly hyped to find out that they were planning to build a concrete ramp to replace it, which was rapidly put up in 3-4 weeks. The ramp is perfect, with whippy transition and a nice sized coping. Finally, skaters have a high quality facility and a reason to travel to Solihull. We took the opportunity to get the community together, raise awareness and pack out the new ramp, with talented skaters rocking up from Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton and other surrounding areas. We set a speaker up, had a blast, handed some prizes out and seen some great skating go down.

The new ramp at Tudor Grange is a great example of why it is so important to have facilities where the youth can pursue hobbies and talents. Skateboarding or not, young people struggle to find purpose and interests in a dark time of recession and inflation. To some, the future has never looked dimmer. It is essential for the future generations to have safe spaces to meet up with friends and build passionate hobbies. Lack of options lead to young people falling into antisocial behaviour and drugs.

This is a concrete step in the right direction and we are very grateful as a community to call the new ramp ours. We'll continue to push for new skate spaces and we encourage you to thrive for more places for arts to be carried out
