Go Skateboarding Day: The World’s Biggest Skate Event

Go Skateboarding Day—often called World Go Skateboarding Day—is the skateboarder’s answer to Christmas, New Year’s, ya nans Sunday Roast and your birthday all rolled into one. It’s a global celebration that brings skaters of every age, background, and skill level together to share the love of the skating. For 2025, The Vines Supply Co is stepping up to make sure Solihull, Birmingham and the wider UK skate scene gets the ravin party they deserve. Here’s everything you need to know about when is Go Skateboarding Day, what to expect, and why The Vines Supply Co's jam at TG is always a special event in the calendar.

What is Go Skateboarding Day?

Go Skateboarding Day, or GSD for short, is an annual event dedicated to skateboarding. A chance for all the homies to get together for a roll. No pressure, just fun. It was created by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) back in 2004 to promote skateboarding and encourage people of all ages and skill levels to get out and ride. The idea was simple: pick a day, gather skaters, and let the good times roll. Since then, it’s grown into a global phenomenon, with events in cities around the world, including Go Skateboarding Day Birmingham.

The day is all about community, creativity, and getting more people on a board. Whether you’re a long time skater or a first-timer, GSD is a chance to connect, learn, and have fun with people who wanna share the love. All around the world, skate shops, parks, and communities organise group sessions, contests, barbecues, and demos, making it one of the biggest days in the skateboarding calendar. Go Skateboarding Day 2025 is gonna be the best yet.

When is Go Skateboarding Day 2025?

Go Skateboarding Day always falls in June at the official start of summer and the longest day of the year. This gives skaters maximum daylight to hit the streets and parks together. For 2025, that means Saturday, June 21st, is the official date. Mark it in your calendar, tell all the homies, and get ready to roll (and pray for sunshine!)

The History of Go Skateboarding Day

The idea for Go Skatebording Day was cooked up by Don Brown, the former IASC (International Association of Skateboard Companies) Marketing Director, and Per Welinder, co-founder of Birdhouse Skateboards, who wanted a day for the global skate community to ride together and to the raise the profile of skateboarding worldwide.

The first events took place in 2004, with the skate industry getting local communities together for BBQs, jams, and good times. Big names in the game like Tony Hawk, Ryan Sheckler, and Heath Kirchart showed up at the Etnies skate park in Lake Forest, California, setting the tone for years to come. Emerica’s “Wild in the Streets” event in Philadelphia became legendary, with thousands of skaters taking over the city. In Brazil, estimates put the crowd at 25,000 skaters charging through the streets—an energy that’s only grown since.

By 2006, more than 350 events were happening in 32 countries. The IASC even received Special Congressional Recognition from US Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez for its work in promoting skateboarding and encouraging young people to get outside and practice the sport. What started as a grassroots movement has become a global holiday, celebrated from Birmingham to Buenos Aires.

How Has Go Skateboarding Day Evolved?

Since those early days, Go Skateboarding Day has exploded in size. It’s not just about getting skaters together — it’s about showcasing the best of skate culture, supporting local shops, and inspiring the next generation. Skateboarding’s inclusion in the Olympics (whether you like it or not!) has brought even more attention to the sport, and GSD 2025 is set to be the biggest yet.

Events now include everything from skatepark BBQs and best trick contests to street takeovers and product tosses. Local shops like us play a huge role, organising sessions, demos, and giveaways to bring the community together. The day is always a sick celebration of skateboarding, whatever that means to you. Hit up your local to see what they're doin.
