About Girl Skateboards

Girl Skateboards Brand History

Back in 1993, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard, increasingly frustrated with World Industries' corporate approach, began secretly planning what would become skateboarding's most significant rebellion. With filmmaker Spike Jonze and Megan Baltimore, they built a company around a radical idea: professional skateboarders should have genuine futures, with ownership stakes and creative input. The name "Girl" came after someone told Rick Howard he "skates like a girl", which the crew found perfectly, irreverently fitting.

The original team, including Eric Koston, Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson, Tim Gavin, Jovontae Turner and Sean Sheffey, represented skateboarding's elite choosing creative freedom over guaranteed paychecks. Videos like "Mouse" (1996) and "Yeah Right!" (2003), both directed by Spike Jonze, set new standards for skateboard cinematography and elevated skate videos into cultural art. Girl grew into the Crailtap family alongside Chocolate Skateboards, Lakai Footwear and Royal Trucks, proof that skater-owned companies could build sustainable ecosystems without selling out. The 2019 addition of Breana Geering as Girl's first female team rider showed the company evolving with skateboarding while keeping its founding values intact.

Girl Skateboards Skate Team

The Girl team spans generations of excellence: co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard remain the foundation, joined by Sean Malto, Cory Kennedy, Griffin Gass, Breana Geering, Simon Bannerot, Tyler "Manchild" Pacheco and Niels Bennett.

From Carroll's technical street mastery in "Yeah Right!" to Malto's consistent precision and Geering's history-making addition to the roster, the team embodies Girl's philosophy: support exceptional skateboarding and individual expression, full stop. Riders genuinely collaborate on their pro models, so signature boards reflect real skating styles rather than templates with different graphics.
