Hockey Skateboards started as a sister company to Fucking Awesome with the focus on two gnarly skaters, Donovon Piscopo and John Fitzgerald. Anthony Van Engelen said of the idea of the brand name “If you skate with those dudes, they are so gnarly… it’s kind of brutal, kind of like Hockey.” AVE and Jason Dill came up with the idea for Hockey around the time they left Alien Workshop to focus on FA and run it as a proper brand.

Hockeys direction has been strongly influenced by Benny Magliano. He had previously worked with Dill and Van Engelen at Alien Workshop as a filmer for a number of their film parts. Benny is the main creative force behind the short Hockey skate clips that are put to announce new Hockey clothing and skateboard collections.

Hockey was officially launched in April 2015 with a self titled promotional vedit starring both John and Donovon, and if you look closely enough you can see AVE switch flipping in the background of one of Donovon’s parts. AVE had hit both John and Donovon up a year before Hockey launched asking them to be a part of the company. “Our plan was to ride spray painted boards for a year.” Donovon told Grey Skate Mag of the early plans.

However, having just left Workshop the guys rode FA boards for a short while until “it just started happening” with Hockey. “It happened within the blink of an eye. It was fucking crazy” Donovon recalls. To this day Hockey are putting out consistently trailblazing clips and are matching that creativity with their irreverent collection of decks and apparel.
