Heard It On The Great Vines | Skateboarding News | 30.09.2024
“I like skateboarding because it's backyard danger. You don't need to go on an alpine holiday to get the thrills”
Wake up, September's ended!
I usually waffle on about each video but there's a lot of videos to go through this week so we'll keep it brief!
Welcome to another episode of 'Heard It On The Great Vines'
where we talk about the latest skateboarding videos, skateboard magazines, brands, skatewear & gossip that's been releaesed over the last week.
SKATEBOARDING NEWS THIS WEEK
Nike SB - Gachi
Another Incredible Japanese Skate Video
The Japanese scene has been on fire lately 🔥🇯🇵 After releases such as Vans - WABI-SABI & GX1000 - Japan 2024, Nike SB have followed up with their own installment, "GACHI".
GACHI
NIKE SB’s GACHI video is all action from start to finish, with no wasted time on roll ups and high-fives. Featuring heavy hitters like Daisuke Ikeda , Ryo Motohashi, Taihou Tokura, and Keyaki Ike, plus guest appearances from the rest of the Japanese SB crew.
The video blends gritty old-school vibes with a funky soundtrack. Expect techy lines with some nice Japanese scenery.
Sengo Prevost - Du Bon
An Introduction to Sengo Prevost
Sengo absolutely smashed it with his first full part! Perfect back three form, mind-blowing switch bench-to-bench precision at Bastille, and on the topic of Japan, a smashing Tokyo ender. This part exceeded our expectations, and we can’t wait to see where he goes next.
Big props to Hadrien Buhannic for bringing this project to life! Check out his part on Free Skate Mag.
Lawrence Ravail – Early Bird
Who the Hell is Lawrence Ravail?
I have no idea how Lawrence wasn't on our radar. He's a beast! Another banger up live on Free Skate Mag.. the last few clips are absolutely cracked.
Noseblunt's galore, scary hubbas most wouldn't dare to approach and ofcourse a selection of fat stair cases. Overall, an unreal talent with a great trick selection.
A funky trance tune and a combo of close fisheye lines and long lens singles, the whole part's a little overwhelming in a good way. . Achille Isnard definitely did a great job with the filming 👌.
Leo Baker's First Shoe - Nike SB React Leo
Leo Baker
Owner of Glue Skateboards, originally skating under the name Lacey Baker, Leo came out as non-binary and became a prominent voice in the LGBTQ+ skate community. Now Leo has got their name on a shoe, the pro model NIKE SB React Leo.
Nike SB React Leo
The shoe looks alright aesthetically, built as a gender-neutral shoe, which is great because lots of female skateboarders end up just wearing skate shoes labelled as a shoe for men.
The shoe features a rich leather upper, overlaid with suede in high-wear areas offering solid durability. It also features a mid-top construction that aims to stay sturdy in its lifespan, while allowing the break-in period to be minimal.
"I wanted the shoe to be utilitarian with elevated moments and fashiony vibes, but ultimately to be a great skate shoe" - Leo Baker
Rio O'Bryne - Vague Part
Rio O'Byrne
Vague Skate Mag have released some heat too, releasing young Rio O'Bryne's first part, a 2:30-minute video featuring Rio in London & Barcelona skating to 'Rich Girl - Daryl Hall & John Oates' (Banger!).
His First Part
Filled with dream spots, smooth rail manoeuvres and a fluid style, Rio's part, although short, was a pleasure to watch. He swings a lot of 5-0's to crooks, shifties some ollies and loves an alley-oop 180. Honourable mention to Luke Kroon for doing a great job on the filming.
One of Toronto's Most Iconic Hubbas | Skateboarding History
Justin Behan
If you've followed the blog, you know we like Ted Barrow's Spot History videos on Thrasher. Similar to his style of video, Justin Behan also sheds light on legendary skate spots. Not all heroes wear capes... respek!
The Toronto Hubbas
The most Iconic Hubbas in Toronto - Hydro Hubba. This Hubba located at the Ontario Power Generation building was a very popular skate spot back in the 1990's and the early 2000's and was typically only approached by top professional skateboaders such as, Ryan Smith, Chris Cole, Gailea Momolu, Colt Cannon & More.
Adidas Skateboarding x Black Sheep Skate Shop x CLTFC
The Football / Skate Shop Collab Skate Shoe
No, not our one, not Manchester's Black Sheep. Adidas have brought this shoe out in collaberation with North Carolina Skate Shop Black Sheep and North Carolina Football Team Charlotte FC in the MLS.
To be honest, these are a banging shoe. The colourway and leather finish is exquisite... but I don't give a monkeys about them.
I'm just mentioning them this week because it's confused us all in the shop. So yeah, American Black Sheep 🇺🇸, not our one here in England 🇬🇧.
Spezzarura - Rawr 4
Rat Ratz
Italy's Ratz crew is a skateboarding collective featuring the likes Ale Cesario, Vince Palmer, Niko Giovannoni, Nils Matijas, and Jade Mendoza. The line up is always an exciting and heavy one 🇮🇹🤌
Spezzaruara
In essence, Spezzatura acts as the production side of the Rat Ratz crew, with other features. Together, they create great videos highlighting the underground Milan skate scene.
At least that's my understanding of it, they're fairly new to the UK's radar. I love the video's soundtracks and they usually sneak just the right amount of hijinx in the videos.
RAWR 4
This one's got more b-roll than you might like and there's no music at all. Which usually would annoy me, but you know, it's got the vibe you're out with the crew and you feel the hype when the trick gets stomped. Their videos are always worth your while. Rawr 4 is no exception. Bueno 👍
Imagine Peacge
Who's in it?
Free Skate Mag has released the 12-minute instalment 'Imagine Peacge', which is a name that unfortunately has flown right over my head. Although not released as a collective or a brand, it's a video by Shqipron Bobaj (What a name), who films some of the Hours is Yours stuff.
It features a bunch of new names for me, Martino Cattaneo, Kilian Zehnder, Michael Brunner, Schianta Lepori, Simon Perrottet and much more. Quite a stacked video
Prepare for Motion Sickness
I have to be in the mood for this one. I can never decide. Do I think Strobeck's a genius filmmaker or do I think he's taking the p*ss... we know Shqipron likes him. Super zoom baby! Overall, a really enjoyable video! You might get a little triggered if you don't like trendy filming.
