SKATEBOARDING NEWS THIS WEEK
Lakai are in Trouble
Uncertainty for the future of Lakai Footwear
If you haven't heard by now, Lakai Footwear have been losing around $1million a year and there was serious talks about ending the shoe company.
Lakai have been brought before
Lakai has already been brought out twice due to financial crisis, with Rick Howard and Mike Caroll still having ownership and impact in the company. This time Lakai was up for sale for over a year before being finally brought again, this time by new Lakai CEO Marc Roca.
The current situation
Marc offered Mark & Rick 10% of Lakai with no strings attached, which is vital, as the 2 founders are a big part of the brands identity. However, he wanted to kick off a significant amount of the Lakai team to make up some money. This caused some conflict and ended up with Rick & Mark getting booted out of the company...
Watch the full story, there are a few videos discussing the topic, but SKATEINFORMANT sums the situation up pretty well.
Debris – a South-East Skateboard Video by Tom Pickard
Tom Pickard's 33 Minute Installment
We are getting treated to the longer skate videos this week folks, this one from the South-East of England 🏴
Grey Skate Mag summed this video up beautifully in there description:
'The project is a labour of love, shining light on some lesser-known skaters in the region & featuring all manner of weird & wonderful locations, the result of some seriously dedicated spot hunting by Tom, Al Hodgson & the rest of the crew. 'Debris' was filmed mainly in East & West Sussex & Kent, with Surrey, Essex & Cornwall in the mix too. Supported by Source Skate Co.'
The Vibe of The Video
In a similar, yet different way to Jacob Harris, Tom Pickard has a brilliant way of creating interesting, trippy cinematic segments foreshadowing and between clips, with a tasteful music selection throughout.
The footage itself makes it one of those videos that isn't crazy tech per-say, but one that just makes you want to go and skate. The weird and wonderful spot selection is nice, but the vibes of just skating with your mates and getting hyped up are even better.
Give it a watch, it deserves a lot of love!
GX1000: Your Favourite Things
Hills and Wobbles
Known for tackling San Fransisco hill bombs more than anyone else, GX1000 videos always include crazy inclines and someone in a beanie power sliding. Pure excellence.
This episode has about 30 people in it, featuring the likes of T Funk, Zack Krull & Nile Gibbs. I always struggle to list many people on GX1000 because there's always an army of people on the line-up, but that's cool!
Your Favourite Things
As usual, expect front yard handrails to hillbombs, free-falling bails, and unique wallie / wallride spots. These are an essential part in any GX1000 video. Pedro Delfino switch hillbombs Kearby Street, which is so bonkers that we tried to upload it on TikTok and it got removed for 'Dangerous Activities & Challenges'. F*ck you Tiktok!
GX1000 blessed us with a good 20 minutes of footy, which is easier to do with 30-second hillbomb footage 😂, but it's far from boring. Their soundtracks are also always pretty good in my opinion. We get a nice bit of saxophone over this one, which is a bonus! And the jazz soothes into soul as the not-so-relaxing video proceeds.
It's simple, if it's GX1000, watch the video.
Andrew Wilson goes Pro for Krooked Skateboards
Andrew Wilson
Krooked Skateboards Andrew Wilson recently posed with The Gonz, showing off a few of his new pro planks out in New York. It was waited on for a while, and was thoroughly deserved. Should we get a few of his planks in the shop?
The part has more than its fair share of terrifying spots and ledge wizardry.
I don't think I've got anything in this weeks blog to bitch about... sorry. I'll keep it brief. Watch the part!
Tiago Lemos' 'Sure Shot' Spitfire Part
More Tiago Lemos Footy
Primitive, Independent Trucks, Spitfire Wheels & New Balance Numeric's Tiago Lemos is dropping footy left-right-and-centre at the minute.
The Brazilian ledge champ released a Primitive part a few weeks back and is due to have a heavy part in the upcoming New Balance Numeric video 'Intervals' dropping in a few days.
No Throw Away Footy
I thought this one might be being put out because he had some throw-away clips from other projects. I was wrong. Another banging part, with banging ledge lines performed over some banging hip hop. Gang Starr... one of the best yet!
