"OFF THE WALL - SINCE 1966"

The History of Vans Skate: A Journey Through Time

Vans has become synonymous with skateboarding, a brand that not only caters to skaters but has also had a huge hand in shaping skate culture. From its humble beginnings in the 1960s to becoming an iconic name in skatewear, Vans' journey is a fascinating tale of innovation, community, and staying true to its roots. Here's a deep dive into the history of Vans Skate, tracing its evolution and impact on the skateboarding world.

The Birth of Vans Skateboarding

Vans Skate was founded on March 16, 1966, by brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren, along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia. They opened the first Vans store at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California. Originally known as the Van Doren Rubber Company, the brand's mission was simple: to manufacture shoes and sell them directly to the public. On their first morning, twelve customers purchased shoes, which were made on the spot and ready for pick-up in the afternoon.

The Introduction of the Authentic

One of the earliest designs was the Vans #44 deck shoe, now known as the Authentic. This shoe quickly became popular among California's skateboarding community due to its rugged make and sticky sole. Skaters loved the grip and durability, which provided better control and performance on their boards.

The Era of Innovation: The Vans Skate Era

The 1970s marked a significant period for Vans Skate with the release of the Vans Era in 1976. This shoe was designed in collaboration with skateboarding legends Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. The Era featured padded collars and a variety of color combinations, offering both comfort and style. It became an instant hit and remains a popular choice among skaters today.

The Iconic Vans Slip-On

Following the success of the Era, Vans introduced the Slip-On in 1977. Its easy, slip-on style and unique checkered pattern quickly made it a cultural icon. The Slip-On gained massive popularity when it appeared in the 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," worn by Sean Penn’s character, Jeff Spicoli. This exposure catapulted Vans Skate into mainstream culture, transcending the skateboarding community.

Expanding the Line: Vans Old Skool and Sk8-Hi

The Vans Old Skool, originally known as Style 36, debuted in 1977. It was the first shoe to feature the iconic side stripe, known as the "Jazz Stripe." This model combined functionality with a touch of flair, making it a favorite among skaters. Following the Old Skool, Vans introduced the Sk8-Hi in 1978. The Sk8-Hi provided additional ankle support and protection, further cementing Vans' reputation for creating skate-friendly footwear.

The Impact of the 1980s and 1990s

The 1980s and 1990s saw Vans Skate expanding its influence in the skateboarding world and beyond. The brand began sponsoring professional skateboarders and events, solidifying its presence in the skate culture. Vans' commitment to the community was evident through initiatives like the Vans Warped Tour, a traveling music and extreme sports festival that began in 1995. This tour brought together skaters, musicians, and fans, fostering a sense of community and shared passion.

Vans and the Skateboarding Renaissance

The 2000s marked a renaissance for Vans as skateboarding grew in popularity globally. Vans continued to innovate, introducing new technologies and designs to meet the evolving needs of skaters. Collaborations with artists, designers, and brands helped Vans stay relevant and fresh. The brand also expanded its product line to include apparel and accessories, making it a one-stop-shop for skaters.
