How Do I Get Started With Skateboarding? The Best Ways to Learn
Learning to Skate
Skateboarding is not just a sport, it's a big part of a lot of people's lifestyles. It's all about expressing yourself, pushing your limits, and enjoying the experience by yourself or with your friends. Whether you're a beginner just starting out or an experienced skater looking to level up your game, learning to skateboard can be a super exciting and rewarding journey, despite the slams along the way. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the best ways to learn to skateboard, including YouTube tutorials, Braille Skateboarding, Rubicon Camps, and lessons at Creation indoor skate park or Bournbrook DIY in Birmingham.
Friends & Experienced Skaters
Probably the best way to learn to skateboard is by skating with friends who already skate or by speaking to fellow skaters down at the skate park. Most people down at your local will be more than happy to take a few minutes to give you some direction and tips with whatever it is you're trying to achieve so don't be afraid to approach someone and ask! If you've got friends who already skate then all the better, grab your board and watch, ask, listen and learn!
YouTube Tutorials
YouTube tutorials have become a popular and accessible way to learn how to skateboard from experienced skaters. With countless videos available from professional skateboarders and experienced instructors, YouTube can be a valuable resource for skaters of all levels.
Many skaters find watching demonstrations and explanations of tricks, foot placement, and body positioning helpful to learn the correct techniques. Some popular YouTube channels for skateboard tutorials include Braille Skateboarding, VLSkate, and Nigel Alexander, among others.
Camp Rubicon
Apart from YouTube tutorials, skateboard camps and lessons can be a fantastic way to learn and progress in skateboarding. One popular option is Camp Rubicon Skate Camps, which offer skateboarding camps for all ages and skill levels in various locations around the UK. These camps provide a supportive and immersive environment for skaters to learn and practice their skills, with professional instructors offering guidance and feedback. Rubicon Camps also offer a wide range of activities beyond skateboarding, such as yoga, arts and crafts, and team-building exercises, creating a well-rounded experience for participants.
Creation Skate Park
For those located in the Midlands, Creation Skate Park is a great place to learn to skateboard. Creation is a renowned indoor skate park that offers skateboard lessons for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skaters. The lessons are led by experienced instructors who provide personalized coaching and feedback to help skaters progress at their own pace. Creation also offers open skate sessions, allowing skaters to practice and refine their skills in a safe and controlled environment. With its diverse features, including ramps, rails, and bowls, Creation provides a fun and challenging space for skaters to learn and improve their skills.
Bournbrook DIY
If you're a local or student in Selly Oak, Birmingham, you might be familiar with the abandoned space behind Aldi on the Bristol Road, known as Bournbrook. For years, the basketball courts were chained up and neglected, often used only as a canvas for graffiti writers in the city. However, one skater and innovator, Shaun Boyle, saw the potential in this space and had a vision for a project that would transform it into a thriving DIY skatepark.
In May 2020, Shaun and a core team of experienced skatepark designers and constructors, including James Hemming (Hem) and Tom Galway, started working on the Bournbrook DIY skatepark. They began by clearing the rectangular, concrete "play area" and adding a few ledges. With hard work, dedication, and the support of the community, the space has now been transformed into a beautifully designed park with a vibrant community.
Shaun utilised the power of social media to spread the message about the project and raised £2,895 (of a modest £5,000 target) through their GoFundMe page. This funding has allowed them to purchase building materials and make the project a reality. It's a true testament to the DIY spirit and the power of community involvement. Now the first ever skate DIY to be officially recognised by Birmingham City Council. A massive win for everyone involved and testament to the determination and motivation given to the project.
Now registered as a Community Interest Company, the park can apply for funding and grow the scene and positive social impact even more. If you haven’t visited the spot yet, it’s a welcoming place to hang out, make friends and learn some new tricks. Hit up their instagram page for details on the skate lessons that are run at the park!

Tips for Learning
In addition to the aforementioned resources, there are a few key tips to keep in mind when learning to skateboard:
-
Start with the basics: Before attempting complex tricks, it's crucial to master the fundamentals of skateboarding. This includes learning how to ride and balance on the board, push, turn, and stop. Spending time on these basic skills will build a solid foundation for your skateboarding journey. Trying to put your tail on the ground, doing some tick-tacs, anything that pushes you slightly out of your skill level.
-
Use proper safety gear: Skateboarding can be physically demanding and comes with its share of risks. It's essential to wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards, to protect yourself from injuries. It's also important to skate in safe areas, away from traffic and pedestrians.
- Don't be afraid of the local skaters! They may look like they're going very fast and doing insanely difficult manoeuvres, but they will be happy to have you in the session. They will more than likely be your friends in no time and they'll have some crucial tips on whatever you're working on. Skaters with people who are on a higher skill level is a great way to progress and learn skatepark etiquette.
-
Practice regularly: Consistency is key to improving in any skill, and skateboarding is no exception. Set aside regular practice sessions and dedicate time to skateboarding. The more you practice, the faster you will progress and gain confidence on the board.
-
Be patient and persistent: Skateboarding can be challenging, and progress may not come overnight. It's important to stick with it, be consistent and always enjoy it!
As with learning anything, don't try to attempt tricks or obstacles that are out of your skill level, take your time and enjoy the journey!
