SKATEBOARDING NEWS THIS WEEK
HEADZ by Harrison Woolgar
A Full Length Straight Out Of Brighton
Following an injury that put him out for a while, peg leg Harrison 'Yarris' Woolgar took his VX1000 out, gathered an unreal crew and made a superb well-needed UK full-length skate video straight out of Brighton.
Kicking off with some vintage footage of the old England seaside, the video showcases British skateboarding perfectly for anyone off the island who doesn't realise the crust we put up with.
The soundtrack is awesome, with the whole crew pulling through to make a great half-hour skate project. I usually have a little bitch about what I didn't like, but this one's ace. It will be one to rewatch with the crew for well-needed English inspiration. Good work fellas 💪
The Crew
The video kicks off with a well-structured ledge and rail part from Albert Edmonds, introducing the viewer to a lot of Brighton skate spots that feature throughout the video.
The whole crew killed it, with too many names to credit. But there are stand-out parts from little shredder Diggs English and the UK's new-found treasure Evan Johnson. Evan barely moves his arms, has a really unique set of ledge tekkers and is all over a steezy don. One of my new favourites.
Headz has to be this week's highlight. If you haven't seen it, get off all the American baloney and witness a project put together by friends showcasing gritty UK spots through a gritty VX.
Jamie Foy: Charred Remains
Jamie Foy: GOATED
Regarding American baloney, no one does it better than Jamie Foy.
New Balance Numeric, Deathwish, Independent Trucks and Spitfire Wheels frontman Jamie Foy drops a nuts amount of footage every year, handling handrails I'd sack immediately.
He's a happy chappy, a chunky monkey, really likeable dude and an overall great role model to the kids. The youth love him, but it's confusing for parents when their kid wants a deck from a brand called Deatwish.
His New Spitfire Part
As expected, his new part features a great trick selection on huge handrails. But I like this Foy part specifically because of how slick the ledge tekkers are. Unbelieeeeevable tekkers. There's not a weak ledge clip in there, he gets tech AF!.
He's cracked! While most graft their arse off for one clip, Foy collects 3 or 4 at each spot. That's why he can make a full part out of 'Charred Remains'. If these are his leftover clips, I'm waiting for a part he takes seriously, because this Spitfire part is as legit as they come.
"CAN'T WAIT TO GET OLD" by Sergio Ben Mario
Eeriest Video of the Week
Free Skate Mag brought us a project with edgy, demonic, tense editing in Sergio Ben Mario's latest project featuring a heavy lineup of Austyn Gillette, Daniel Kim, Leon Charo-Tite, Patrick ‘Rocco’ Rogalski and more.
Don't watch this one on psychedelics, you've been warned! The video is a mashup of Sergio Ben Mario’s memories from New York, Tokyo, Porto and Berlin. A video full of twists and turns.
The Video
Starting off with a good old slam, the video is full of edginess... a bit too much for my liking. But I know the youngers love that shit.
Grunge and Trap music, zooming into the skater's face then feet, slow-mo landings... all of it. It's one of those videos that could have been half the length without the high-fives, roll-ups and shenanigans before clips.
That being said, there are some really classy manoeuvres on some dream spots. Around these perfect spots, Sergio does a good job of showing all the nutters running around, especially in the New York clips.
The editing and trap music started growing on me, I wanted an iced-out chain and some lean after the first 10 minutes. The enders bonkers too.
If you're looking for a video with shenanigans, a lot of hype and style points, this one's for you! If you're more into a video stacked with clips and a 90's vibe, give it a miss.
Vans - "WABI-SABI"
VANS JAPAN
I only have one prejudice about Japanese skateboarders... I expect them to uniquely shred!
Literally every video I've seen come out of Japan has been a creative masterclass and this one is no exception. Vans Japan team is full of dudes you probably haven't heard of before and have names which are difficult to remember, but they're worth remembering. Like Yushin Hashimoto, Junnosuke Hasegawa and Raimu Sasaki to name a few.
Wabi-Sabi
Vans Japan used their fisheye to capture some rapid lines showcasing the beauty of Japan. Something about the architecture through a fast-moving fish eye lens, as well as the upbeat Japanese music, makes this a unique watch.
Locations aside, the clips are awesome. A majority of the video is rapid lines, with a clean-cut style and flow. No shenanigans, no zoom-ins... straight heat from Northeast Asia 🔥🇯🇵
Lakai - "COLD DIP"
The Lakai Team
I'm a big fan of the Lakai team, with this one featuring Griffin Gass, Simon Bannerot, Tyler Pacheco, Vincent Alverez and more. They travelled the Northwest of America for this one. It looked hot 🥵
Cold Dip
There's some diving into lakes, but they're skating the pool... and the angles are sickening. There are some badass pool manoeuvres in here.
Don't worry new gen, they go on to skate ledges and handrails to some upbeat country tunes. Only a short video, but a quality watch!
The whole skate trip just looked like a cracking tine with the fellas. Watch this before a skate and you'll ditch the ash trey and get out the door.
