Rodney Mullen

SKATEBOARDING NEWS THIS WEEK

HOURGLASS | Kevin "Spanky" Long

Kevin "Spanky" Long's Career

To most, Kevin "Spanky" Long needs no introduction. He showed up in the skate scene in the early 2000s, quickly making a name for himself with his ability to skate sharp inclines with a mean straight face.

His part in "Baker 3" was a game-changer. He also had stand-out parts in "Baker has a Deathwish", “Zero Skateboards – Strange World” and more recently "Baker 4". If you're a yute and haven't watched any of them, there's your next 5 hours sorted.

Spanky’s unique vibe, dress code and no-fear attitude make him loved by the old heads and the young guns, for good reason. He also makes great Photoshop edits of everyone on his Instagram.

His new Ace Trucks Part

Ageing like fine wine, this part's another banger from Spanky. The only thing I can moan about is the music's a bit boring, but it's very well-themed with the vibe of the video. It's like a mix of pop-rock and a cool movie soundtrack.

As always, Spanky tests the limits of physics, wallieing the smallest inclines and pulling off some deadly wall rides. He also slappies massive ledges, so there are ledge clips for the curb lovers.

Adidas Skateboarding's 'BUILD' Project | Manchester

Adidas Skateboarding's 'BUILD' Event

Adidas Skateboarding joined forces with Factory International for their 'BUILD' project, setting up a temporary skate plaza in Manchester

Over two weeks, the plaza hosted skate jams, workshops, and skate schools, featuring local favourites like NOTE Shop, Projekts, Gooseside DIY, and Drama Call.

To kick off 'BUILD,' adidas Skateboarding threw a jam session with Manchester locals and the adidas global team. Check out the video recap by Vague Skate Mag

Who's in the highlights video?

The video features the ledge getting shredded by: Josh Blasutto, Nikolai Piombo, Christian Henry, Sam Narvaez, Vitória Mendonça, Tom Snape, Dan Fisher-Eustance, Shaun Wilkinson, and Mani Haddon.

This Old Ledge: Wallenberg

Ted Barrow is back

Thrasher's videos featuring Ted Barrow giving some spot history are great. I quickly click and watch them, because they're nerdy and give an in-depth look at the spots we all know.

Wallenberg and Surrounding Spots

In this one, Ted takes a look at San Fransisco's most famous skateboarding spot... Wallenberg. He discusses the history of how the school yard and surrounding areas were built and why they are the way they are.

To be honest, I could watch Ted talk about my local curb in Walsall tesco car park and still be entertained.

Jermaine Whittaker - SPIRIT

The Skater & Filmer

Ledge pioneer Jermaine Whittaker produces line after line attacking nothing but ledge. Straight style and a clean trick selection behind some cinematic backdrops.

Blaine Williams is on the cam. I'm a big fan of 4:3 footy, and Blaine delivered with both the angles and a VX1000... even taking a hit to the MK1 fisheye in the process.

The Part

Jermaine and Blaine adventured to the best ledges Manhattan and Brooklyn have to offer, with support from the mandem: Devin SweatMikey Weiner and Presley Sweat.

The part uses some grainy retrowave style animations between ledge moves. Pushing noselide to crook, tail to sw crook.

This one's pure tech ledge tekkers all day baby.

Braden Hoban "Into the Light" for Emerica

Braden Hoban & Emerica

Braden Hoban is the real deal. He's gained attention in street contests since 2017, but he's better known for video parts including a breakthrough part in the 2021 Toy Machine video "Vaccine" and the ender part in the May 2024 Toy Machine video "Real Life Sucks."

Braden is a good fit for Emerica Shoes because he's a big rail guy with a heavy flick. A Californian surfer-looking dude front-feebling a big rail screams Emerica.

"Into the Light"

I'm a big fan of the production of this part. A lot of older brands struggled to bring the nostalgic feel to their videos, moving to 4k and 60fps+. Emerica have done brilliantly to keep the feel of the brand through Braden in this part.

All tricks were filmed at night, all brightly lighting up a rail, hubba or fire hydrant. That dark, green Emerica vibe is present, with good use of slow-mo, alternative angles and an incredible trick selection.

This is one you can truly sit back and enjoy. If i was to moan about anything, you have to wait a full minute before you see a skateboard 😂

Plan B Skateboards Presents: Joslin & Lazer

Plan B's new "Rodney v Daewon"

Plan B bring us a showcase of Chris Joslin and Lazer Crawford. Neither of them disappointed, with both of them stacking a fat amount of footage.

Chris kicks it off by blasting massive set hammers behind "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden (Big choon son). He also displays some buttery ledge tekkers which was unexpected. Chris Joslin's a well-established stairs / gap hall of famer. This is another instalment.

Danny has some punk rock and a really well rounded part. It's hard to follow up Joslin, but Danny does well, with some handrail tech to be fair!! Heavy tekkers and a lot of clips.

Free Skate Mag has brought out a really cool interview with the two of them, which you can check out here!
