Welcome to another episode of

'Heard It On The Great Vines'

where we talk about the latest skateboarding videos, skateboard magazines, brands, skatewear & gossip that's been released over the last week.

🍾 HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳

SKATEBOARDING NEWS THIS WEEK

Kojiro Hara – Loophole

Who the hell is Kojiro Hara?

Kojiro Hara is a pretty underground name, at least to me, but his latest part is certainly worthy of making this week's blog. He's from Fukuoka, Japan 🇯🇵, representing Snack Skateboards & OJ Wheels.

His 'Loophole' Part

Kojiro brings us gritty vibes from what I can only assume is a Sony VX1000, over the top of some bassy jazz. The VX sounds against the tune is music to my ears. His ledge manouvers are simple but creative, showcasing some sick Japanese. The Japanese culture and architecture give off a really cool aesthetic.

We've got to give a shout out to Keisho Ko, who did a great job of filming and lighting up the night-time clips. And as always, a big shoutout to Free Skate Mag.

eS Skate Shoes kick Tom Asta off the team

Who the hell is Tom Asta?

Tom is a legendary ledge skater who's been repping eS skate shoes, Santa Cruz and Ricta Wheels for as long as I can remember. He's a really nice dude who's been loyal to his sponsors and has had years where he marketed the products well and often.

Why did eS kick him off?

In this video, Tom explains how he parted ways with eS, in an unfortunate way at no fault of his own. The gist of it: Pierre Senizergues, sole owner of Etnies, eS, Emerica, and 32 has sold the brands to a family owned group that owns a bunch of snowboard brands. SoleTech will cease to exist and the Nidecker Group will take over the brands. Pierre will remain as CEO of the four brands.

Ok cool, except riders are dropping like flies. For example, Chris Joslin, undeniably Etnies' biggest name, has been dropped by Etnies. These moves seem confusing to me, why are they throwing their biggest guys to corporate shoe companies who will pay them better? To save on budgets? It seems like a stupid move. Hear what they said to Tom and his take on the situation.

Ted Barrow: This Old Ledge: USC Blocks

Ted Barrow: The Spot history tour guide

Alongside the Dern Brothers, Ted Barrow is every skateboarder's tour guide to the most legendary spots, hosting a series published on Thrasher Magazine relaying the deep grooves that have been made over the years on skate spots loved worldwide.

This Episode: USC Blocks

University of Southern California hosts a campus with some of the most seasoned ledges in history. Although several attempts have been made by the University to skate-stop the spot, skateboarders have continuously poked holes in the plan with a combination of vandalism and creativity. A beautiful combination.

Check it out, you can find a lot of appreciation in the history of a chunky ledge.

Lurknyc - Ben Kadow

Who the hell is Ben Kadow?

Known for the past decade or so for being an intense, crazy, entertaining nutter from New Yoek City, Ben Kadow is pro for Hockey Skateboards.

Lurknyc is run by legendary New York filmer Nick vonWerssowetz, who's been taking his VX1000 out and capturing how bonkers New York pedestrians are, as well as the skaters.

His lurknyc video

Filmed from 2013-15, Nick films Ben taking on some tall ledges, boosted ollies and gnarly slams with a strained face. Raw to the floor. This one's got a nostalgic feeling of watching lurknyc and Hockey when I was a teenager.

Julian Agliardi - Pocket Part

Who the hell is Julian Agliardi?

Do we have another project Mbappe on our hands? Some cracked yute? Julian Agliardi is 15, has curly hair and he's from California so he's got the starter pack sorted.

His 'Pocket' Part

Little Julien's trick selection is past his years and he's got a good eye for picking the right trick for the spot. I bet he drinks about 3L of Monster a day.

He's bumping some pretty gangster shit in his part, I'm feeling the hip-hop tune, and then it swaps to a lively bit of... salsa? Whatever it is it's got a wicked guitar solo. He's got some unforgivable fits, but that only amplifies his cracked kid style.

Julian Agliardi is one to watch, he's a beast.

Majick - Orange & Blue

Who are Majick Skateboards?

New Zealand crew Majick are an underground skate crew. In this one, they put together some beautiful lines on 4:3 behind the soothing 'Blue Velvet by Boby Vinton, an absolute tuuuuuuuune. A super solid crew making a super solid project with super solid filming.

Orange & Blue

After analysing one of the crew's orange & blue scarf, they showcase the lovely architecture you've got to skate in down under... not Australia but it's still like the other side of the world. Majick are relatively unknown and I've been a big fan for the past year or so, give them a watch.

Silas Baxter-Neal roughest rough cut. Open sequence.

Who the hell is Silas Baxter Neal?

Silas Baxter Neal, from Portland, is a clean-cut stair handler, 2008 SOTY and overall legend.

His new Rough Cut

Silas released his 'Open Sequence' part on Thrasher Magazine 3 years ago, which features only two iconic Portland skate spots—Keller Fountain and Lovejoy Fountain—designed by architect Lawrence Halprin. Both parks share a multileveled layout that opens up endless lines and creative routes for skaters. However, the exposed aggregate concrete makes the ground and ledges rough, crusty, and tough to skate. This footage was shot during the early COVID days when the fountains were dry, creating a deserted and almost eerie vibe. Keller Fountain Park, finished in 1970, appears first in the clip, followed by Lovejoy Fountain Park, completed in 1966. These spots are just a few blocks apart in downtown Portland.

Thrasher's DIY: Rosebud

Rosebud DIY

The DIY capital of the world might be South Dakota's Rosebud Reservation 🇺🇸 DIY's are popping up all over. Kanfoush and Pedro Delfino lend some muscle to the locals and shred some builds made by the community. They made it because their hometown has no spots and is in the middle of nowhere...  it's probably still got more spots than brum 😂

Ace Trucks | Cody Chapman part

Who the hell is Cody Chapman?

Cody Chapman is a ruler of all terrains, walls, trees, ledges, rails... you name it. Ace have picked him up, alongside spitfire, nice duo to have under the bonnet.

His Ace Trucks Part

Well I don't really want to talk about anything else... the hardflip he does is unreal. Absolute floating beauty. The rest of the part's good too. In fact, he does a few floaty kickflips and hardflips, but that one is special, you'll know which one

Why was this filmed like a cinema movie though? That thang looooongggggg ain't it! Camera dimensions looking like a supreme sticker.
